Data Management Plan – An Essential Tool for the Data Industry

Data Management Plans or DMPs have taken a greater importance in the last few years with concerns rising about subjects such as open science, open data, data reuse and comparative review of research. These concerns have had such an impact that the drafting and implementation of sensible data management plans have become essential criteria for funding agencies in the allocation of research grants. Therefore, data management plans aim to address the various concerns that both research teams and other data production teams have to tackle before the actual data collection takes place for the realisation of the project (e.g., extent of the data to be collected, purpose of the collection). DMPs also aim to create standards upon which researchers and developers will manufacture their data during the process (metadata standards, naming conventions) and on how they will sustain the availability of data even after the project has ended (security, access policy, licensing).
